Trumpageddon

Trumpageddon

November 9, 2016 was a forgettable and probably the most ominous day in American history. The nation elected a racist, misogynist, Obama’s-class-to-crass President to the White House who won the election by a minority public vote—3 million fewer votes than his opponent Hillary Clinton. That’s one of the crazy things about the Electoral College, but that’s a topic for a separate blog. Trump seems to be a disciple of Reagan and a fan of Putin; Reagan is probably tossing in his grave!

What’s pathetic about the current situation is the folks he has picked for his cabinet positions:
  • ·         Rick Perry who wanted to abolish the Department of Energy to head it! This is the guy from oil-rich Texas who denied global warming, strongly opposed Trump during the primaries, and couldn’t even remember what federal agencies/departments that he wanted to abolish—all of a sudden is a fan of the Orange Orangutan.
  • Ms. BetsyVoss who, with her husband, ran a charter school in Detroit which is the lowest-performing big city in the country. According to CNN, nearly half of charter schools in Detroit are ranked in the bottom of American schools, according to the Education Trust Midwest. Twenty percent were given a "D" or "F" grade. And 80 percent of charter schools in the state are now operating as for-profit institutions.
  • ·        Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil and a Putin Puppet (because Exxon has interest in Russia’s yet-untapped vast oil and gas resources), as Secretary of State.
  • ·         Ben Carson to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Here is a half-asleep, Seventh-day Adventist (we’re not attacking religion here) who thinks the world is 6,000 years old!
  • Oklahoma Attorney General Edward Scott Pruitt to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. He has filed or joined some two dozen lawsuits to block EPA regulations.

·         The list goes on.

What is sad is that many GOP folks who were critical of Trump during his campaign blindly kissed his feet—hoping to get a cabinet position. It’s at least good to see that Chris ‘Fat Bridgegate’ Christie , Rudy ‘Dracula’ Giuliani, Mitt ‘the Shit’ Romney are out of the picture. But the tragedy isn’t over yet: Wait till the GOP House and Senate slowly dismantle, decimate, weaken, partially eliminate that everything that Democrats have delivered—Social Security (FDR), Medicare (Johnson), and Affordable Care Act (Obama). Well, if Americans elected a clueless President, we deserve what we get. Unfortunately, the majority who didn’t vote for Trump will suffer because of the morons who did.

The Hypocritical GOP SOBs: Are they reviving Fascism?

Ever since Donald the Duck Trump announced his candidacy and kept winning state primaries, many old- and new-school GOP members have been trying to distance themselves from the Orange Orangutan to avoid looking stupid. However, things are changing, thanks to the ignorance of the GOP. House Speaker Paul Ryan initially said he wasn't sure he would support Donald and has now changed his mind. John McCain, whom trump didn't call a war hero, is also now supporting the Duck.

Why are these Republicans being so moronic? If they didn't like Donny, who do you think they would have supported -- Bernie or Hillary? Come on, be honest and truthful: You GOP idiots are going to support a GOP candidate even he is a racist ape who hates women, African-Americans, Mexicans, and immigrants, granted comparing Trump to an ape is an insult to the primate. Hitler hated Jews, gypsies, gay people, and the disabled, and Mussolini had his own enemies--Jews and gypsies. This is called Fascism.

With millions of Americans supporting Trump (and eventually expected to vote for him come November), are we becoming a nation of closet Fascists?

Parade of the Republiclown Presidential Contenders

We wrote a blog "G. O. P....R. I. P." back in 2011 when a bunch of moronic GOP clowns were running in the presidential primaries. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Today, five years later, another set of morons are running in the primaries. Let's examine some of these idiots.

Trump, the Orange Orangutan

This man is insane, vulgar, and an insult to any one's intelligence. In high-tech we use the acronym FUD--Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt--usually attributed to IBM. Big Blue used to use this technique to discourage its customers/prospects from buying its competitors' (Amdahl, Fujitsu, and Hitachi) products during the heydays of the mainframe.

Donald the Duck is using FHA--Fear (of immigrants), Hatred (of all foreigners), and Anger (of anything that Obama has done or plans to do) to draw the crowds.

  • This idiot wants to deport 11 million 'illegal' immigrants and build a wall between the U. S. and Mexico. These are estimated to cost about $1 trillion. While we celebrated the tearing down the Berlin Wall in 1989, why are some asinine Americans supporting building this wall? Just so we have no Mexicans coming in and pick up our lettuce, tomatoes, asparagus, artichokes, oranges, grapes, grapefruit...so we can all keep eating unhealthy junk--McChicken Shit, Bugger Sling, Weinershit, Taco Smell...?
  • With all the properties--condos, golf courses, resorts, high-rises, casinos--he owns, one wonders how many Mexicans and undocumented immigrants he employs.

It's sad to see so many Americans embracing this Mad Man. BTW, if you look at the audience attending of any his FHA-filled speeches, they are all white and many of them are Tea Party White Supremacists who don't want Government but are drawing Social Security and living on Medicare! When is the last time you saw an African-American, a Latino/Latina, or an Asian-American in the Orangeman's audience? They all want to take back America. From whom? No one took it away from you to begin with. Oh, yes, an African-American president did. Now, you want to give it to a crazy and insane imbecile?

Cruz and Rubio
We can't tell the difference between these two bums. As all Republicans, they are anti-Obama, but can't clarify what they are pro for. Like all the GOP assholes, they criticize Obama Care, Obama's foreign policy, and his views on global warming, the environment, etc., but have no solutions. And, as all right-wing ignoramus, are in denial and don't believe in scientific facts. As Bill Maher says, they are living in their own bubble.

Dr. Carson

This asleep-at-the wheel man is worse than the Pizza Guy we discussed in our GOP RIP blog cited above. He is a Seventh Day Adventist and a neurosurgeon who believes the world is 6,000 years old! May be he ought to have his head examined!! Reportedly, he is a vegetarian, So was Hitler! Nothing against vegetarians, as yours truly is.

John Kasich
He's probably the most sensible, moderate Republicans of all the GOP candidates, but has no chance of winning the candidacy because he is too logical and rational for the GOP backers.

Conclusions
What is sad to see is how dumb advanced Americans are. Even illiterate Indians had the brains to throw out crooked bastards, bandicoots, and politicians of the Gandhian era ad bring in fresh blood. Of course, that doesn't mean India is in good shape. One man can't fix 65+ years of corruption, inefficiency, and ignorance.

We HOPE Trump wins the candidacy because, by then, Americans will realize how phony and shallow he is and will vote for the Democratic candidate--be it Hillary or Bernie.

G. O. P. ... R. I. P.

The recent series of Republican presidential candidates’ debates have been a parade of clowns. If any of these buffoons were to get elected as our next President, our country will be in deep trouble and a morass from which we will never get out. Despite their superficial differences, they all have many things in common:

They:
  • Are hypocritical
  • Are ignorant for the most part on many domestic issues and historical facts
  • Have no clue about foreign policy
  • Love to see Obama fail more than they want to see America succeed.
Below, in no specific order, is an analysis of each of these jokers.

The Cult Guy – Mitt Romney
He seems to be one of the more sensible candidates, except he belongs to a cult, as some right-wing Christians (wrongly) believe. It took us over 180 years to elect a Catholic president; are we ready to elect a Mormon? Romney passed a universal healthcare bill as Governor of Massachusetts, but is hypocritical to admit it and is attacking Obama’s healthcare plan.

The Hypocritical Cowboy – Rick Perry
Yes, all we need is another idiotic cowboy running our country and eventually declaring, “Mission Accomplished.” He has right-wing pastors that believe Mormonism is a cult. Why do these nincompoops bring religion at all into the picture? Who cares if we elect a bi-sexual atheist as our President, as long as he/she is honest, a good leader, and leaves behind a great legacy? He claims to have created millions of jobs in Texas; yes, mostly in the public sector – from a guy who doesn’t believe in big government. He was extremely critical of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (The Stimulus Plan), yet took in over $25 billion from the plan for Texas and created mostly public sector jobs!

The Pizza Guy – Herman Cain
Cain is a pain you know where. Although he has been involved in some politics since leaving Godfather’s Pizza, he is more of a motivational speaker, often labeled as the African-American version of Zig Ziglar. He has no clue about the U. S. Constitution and recently declared he would gladly sign a Constitutional Amendment to ban abortions. The moron doesn’t even know that the Congress proposes an amendment in the form of a joint resolution; the President does not have a constitutional role in the amendment process, and the joint resolution does not go to the White House for signature or approval. Do we want this dolt running our country?

The Eyebrow Toupee Guy – Ron Paul
It is sad to see a physician who does not want universal healthcare, no government management at all. He would rather have the decisions given to the doctors, not HMOs, big drug companies, and government officials.

Sarah Palin Lite – Michelle Bachman
We should be ever grateful that she is not a history teacher:
  • Compared herself to fellow Waterloo, Iowa resident John Wayne, the late actor. Facts: John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa. John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer who raped and murdered 33 teenage boys in the 70s, was born in Waterloo.
  • On slavery, she declared, "The very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States." Nitwit, can you say A-B-R-A-H-A-M L-I-N-C-O-L-N?
  • In a speech in New Hampshire, she said she was in the "state where the shot was heard round the world at Lexington and Concord." Have you heard of Massachusetts?
  • She once claimed that the Hoot-Smalley Tariff caused the Great Depression. No, it was the Smoot-Hawley bill, co-authored by Republicans Sen. Reed Smoot of Utah and Rep. Willis Hawley of Oregon, and signed into law by President Herbert Hoover. Michelle, you are good at spoonerisms and maybe change your name to Bichelle Machman!
  • She said before Obama, the last time we saw an outbreak of Swine Flu was during Jimmy Carter's term. Wrong again! No, it was during Gerald Ford’s presidency.
She also said that the 45+ million Americans that lack healthcare insurance should depend on charities!

The Rest
Not worth wasting my precious time on the remaining blockheads – Cantor, Gingrich, Huntsman, Roemer – they have already dug their holes, but still haven't learned, "When you are in a hole, stop digging!"

HP dumps webOS, may sell off its PC business

HP announced today it will dump webOS, probably sell off its Personal Systems division, and acquire Autonomy.

We met with a couple of Gartner analysts earlier this year when one of them predicted HP would sell off its PS division soon. Except for printer cartridges, HP is losing its shirt on PCs where gross margins are razor thin. This is mainly due to Asian manufacturers like Acer, Asus, and Lenovo. Even Dell is feeling the pain. IBM got smart years ago, dumped its PC business on Lenovo, and focused heavily on services and software.

As for webOS, we have been saying all along HP's purchase of Palm was a blunder. We've heard of many sad and unhappy users of Palm Pixi that uses webOS with limited features and functionality. Many of them have had their Palm Pixi replaced three times in six months under manufacturer's warranty. On the day of the launch of the now-defunct webOS tablet, HP showed off 1,000 certified apps. Compare that with Apple's launch of iPad when it had 100,000 apps. We wonder what plans HP has for their customers stuck with Palm smartphones. HP's history in consumer electronics has been painful. Do HP Camera, HP TV, iPaq, and Jornada ring a bell to you?

Its just-announced intention to acquire Autonomy is a good move in the  right direction to strengthen its software portfolio. But the company's biggest challenge is integration with all its other software product suites. When it comes to software, HP has a transmission, an engine, a power train, and chassis, but has yet to show off a car! This will be an uphill battle to match Big Blue.

Detroit R. I. P.

The Pittsburgh Penguins just defeated the Detroit Red Wings to win the NHL’s Stanley Cup. Thus ended Detroit’s any further claim to glory as the Pens drove the last nail in Detroit's coffin. Chrysler, Ford, GM (as we have noted before, http://mr20.blogspot.com/2007/06/is-detroit-dead-as-dodo.html and http://mr20.blogspot.com/2007/07/is-detroit-dead-as-dodo-part-2.html), Lions, Pistons, and Tigers are all losers. Motor City has lost over one million in population in 50 years, to now become the 11th largest city in the U. S., just behind San José. Unemployment in Detroit today is 22%, and 30% of the population live on food stamps. This is sad and heart-breaking, and our heart goes out to the ones who are struggling for no fault of theirs.

So, what led to Detroit’s decline? If you are a geeky database/OLTP person, you have heard of ACID (no, not the one you get high on, but Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability). If you are a more enlightened, liberal arts person, you can relate to Elizabeth Kübler Ross’ seminal works on death, dwelling on stages of Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance, Hope…Yes, that’s what killed Detroit.

Arrogance: the Big Three (2½) thought they were invincible from the days of macho, gas-guzzling, chrome-rich cars when gas was 33 cents a gallon.

Complacency: “We are the Big Three, no one can touch us.” This is how the ancient Chinese, Greek, Persian, and Roman empires collapsed—they were all destroyed from within and not from without.

Ignorance: Not knowing how dumb they were and not foreseeing the inevitable games to be played by OPEC and other oil-rich countries.

Denial: Underestimating the Japanese onslaught from all sides—gas-sipping, not gas-guzzling, small cars; well-built mid-sized cars; luxurious high-end cars; and even odd-looking, funky cars like the Honda Element, Toyota Scion, and Nissan Cube that turned Saturn and Pontiac Aztek into a laughing stock.

Many folks have concluded the end of manufacturing in the U. S. and handing it over to China spell a death-knell for the U. S. We are not sure. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, almost 80% of American labor was in agriculture. But once massive mechanization took over, agriculture became secondary to the point that today less than 5% of the U. S. labor population is in agriculture.Yet, folks in early 20th century felt the end of an agriculture-based economy would mean the of the U. S. as we knew it then. But, today we not only grow enough food to feed ourselves, the U. S. government provides subsidies farmers not to grow more food! In early 20th century no one had heard of electronics, aerospace, jet aircraft, rockets, microprocessors, PCs, mainframes, transistors, TV, cassette, 8-Track, VHS, diskette, SSD, DVD, DVR, BlueRay, cell phones, iPod, iPhone…you get the point. So, what are the next killer products that will bring America back to its glory days? Biotech, personalized medicine, nanotechnology in all aspects of our lives, systems biology, optical computing, robots ruling your lives...? Your guess is as good as mine.

I am a short-term pessimist and a long-term optimist: America is sick, not dead, and will come back with a roaring revival that the rest of the world will envy. At least, that's my hope!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

The Vanishing American Middle Class

Whither Middle-Class America?

Age of Vision—the Early Years
America was founded by great critics, not cynics, visionaries, and rebels who saw the injustice that existed for all classes—taxation without representation. They also wanted equality—now labeled socialism by right-wing radicals. Abraham Lincoln abhorred slavery and inspired millions of well-intentioned, hard-working Americans who didn’t just wave the American flag to display superficial patriotism. Thanks to them, our country basically transformed from an agrarian to an industrial giant, with gratitude to remarkable financiers, industrialists, and philanthropists such as the Carnegies, the Fords, the Mellons, the J. P. Morgans , the Rockefellers, the Stanfords, and the Vanderbilts. The first half of the 20th century was essentially shaped by these leaders; we won two World Wars; survived the stock-market crash; and overcame the Great Depression. Hard-working middle class helped boost the standard of living of Americans seven-fold in the 20th century.

Age of Innocence and Rebellion—the 50s to the 70s
The 50s and 70s were the decades of tremendous growth, despite the Cold War threat; an expanding Interstate highway system, built to defend against the Russians, but resulted in a remarkable and unforeseen economic growth; and an explosion of the suburbia, driven by hard-working middle class, proud of a war we had just won. Everyday America worked together as one nation and became the beacon of the world. The world just followed our idealism, leadership, and successes. We reached our peak with man landing on the moon in 1969.

Following that, somehow we got arrogant and complacent, and lost our way. We had elected a crooked President, who resigned to avoid impeachment, followed by a no-op president. Having learned invaluable lessons from the energy crisis of the early 1970s, Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House. His successor Ronald Reagan, a Republican, more of a senior entertainer and story teller than a President, and one of the most overrated Presidents, systematically removed every single one of them! The problem with many Americans is that they neither read history nor learn from it. Reagan left the Governorship of California in 1968, leaving behind the biggest budget deficit and tax increase in the state’s history. For an encore, he left the biggest deficit as a President. This is the man who fought Big Government, disbanded, inter alia, the Civil Aeronautics Board, but transferred everyone one of its employees to other departments (DoT, FAA, NTSB) of the Federal government! The middle class was screwed again, in the name of reducing bureaucracy.

Age of Greed, Arrogance, and Declining Ethics —the 80s to date
As the Governor of California in the late 70s through early 80s, Jerry Brown, Jr., who drove an old Plymouth and never moved to the Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento, set up the Office of Appropriate Technology during his administration to look into alternate energy sources, cleaner air, water, and the environment. Guess what? He was succeeded by a Governor—George Deukmejian—a Republican at that, who disbanded the OAT, while the media had already labeled Jerry ‘Moonbeam’ Brown as a left-leaning Liberal.

Then came the savings and loan mess—driven by crooked and greedy looters and know-all, unchecked, deregulated, rich do-gooders under the guise of leaders. Guess who bailed them out? The Federal Government from taxpayers’ money, aka, the middle class. Once again “trickle down” economics left the nation feeling sour and helpless. This was just the beginning of greed, and we thought it reached its peak during the Dot-Com and the bust that followed it, which took a toll on the middle class—again. Wealth was being accumulated by few at the top. But wait! Here comes the sub-prime mortgage mess—now to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. This is tricky lenders convincing innocent middle class that owning a home is an American birth right and extending them loans they couldn’t afford! In the meantime, Wall Street started screwing Main Street, while highly paid MBAs made off with millions of dollars in signing bonuses, salaries, yearly bonuses many times their salaries, golden parachutes, and enviable exit packages.

Our lawmakers wouldn’t initially pass a $700 billion rescue package to bail out these crooks, saying it was too expensive, but later signed a $840 billion package after many Pork Barrel projects were added! Guess who got screwed again? The poor middle class, citizens just like you and I, who have gradually become poorer over the last three decades. Once again the nation’s wealth got distributed upward to the rich few who were “defending” the American concept. Amidst all this, very few noticed that the Federal Government gave $25 billion in loans from the middle class to the clueless, asleep-at-the wheel Big Three…er, Big 2½, in Detroit because the European and the Japanese car manufacturers are eating their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now, GM wants to buy Chrysler and, together, they will be laying off thousands of blue- and white-collar workers. Two losers don’t a winner make!

So, where did the concept of “government of the people, by the people, for the people” go?

Prologue
The elected leader of a nation leads by example. Nixon being a crook led the S&L executives to say, “Look, if our President can lie, why can’t we?” George W. Bush’s legacy is incessant lying, misrepresentation and careless leadership. Surrounded by a bunch of unethical staff members, he has led a reign of fear vis-à-vis Hitler who led a reign of terror, leading Wall Street to imitate him. Long time ago, I bought a book—actually a booklet—titled Thus Spake, Nixon that contained exactly 18 pages—all blank! (Instead of throwing it away years ago, I wish I had saved it; it would be a collector’s item now.) Dubya inherited the biggest surplus in the history of America and is leaving behind the biggest deficit, a poorer nation with little world respect! Somehow we have now lost our ways again because the driving force of our nation, the middle class, has been disarmed and dismantled. I can now see a George W. Bush Library being built in Crawford, Texas. It’ll be an outhouse!

GOD BLESS THE MIDDLE CLASS AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Whither America, Part 2

We wrote a year ago about America's undisputed leadership, but we are not so sure anymore.

Dow Jones, NASDAQ, and other indices in past few months have driven even the most brilliant, yet clueless, economists from the MIT, Stanford, and Chicago crazy. As the late Walter Reuther, former head of the United Auto Workers used to say, "Economics is the only field where you can gain eminence by never being right."

So, is America on the decline?

Yes. As long as we have greed-driven CEOs that get insanely sky-high bonuses or exit packages rewarded for cheating, stealing, and screwing stockholders, we'll mimic the decline of ancient Greece and Rome.

No. We still believe in capitalism, school prayers, gun-carrying right-wing radicals, Bible-hugging, racism, and a Viet Nam veteran who fought a useless war that we lost, and a folksy, ice-hockey mom with an IQ of 28.

Dow Jones is down almost 40% from its peak, yet we preach how capitalism can salvage the world. Roger McNamee, a well-respected VC from Silicon Valley said, "Wall Street is driven by fear and greed. But remember, fear is temporary, greed is permanent."

God save America and the world!

Why the Democrats could lose the Presidential election

Here are my reasons.
  1. McCain picks a right-wing, gun-toting, Bible-hugging, war-mongering, anti-abortion, pro-school prayer, National Rifle Association member woman as his running mate. Never mind McCain calls Sarah Palin the most popular governor in the U. S. Hey, what about the Governator of Kalifonia? Never mind that no one had heard of her two weeks ago; as a hockey Mom, she couldn't even manage an ice-hockey rink; she led a state with a population of about 600,000; and was the Mayor of town of fewer than 10,000 people. But wait, there is more: She has foreign relations experience because she lived close to Russia! Gimme a break! This is akin to a stupid Texan living in Brownsville claiming he can deal with the Russkies because he lives next door to Mexico!!
  2. Obama could have and should have picked Hillary to please women voters. Today, one of the polls reports many white women voters are favoring the McCain-Palin ticket.
  3. There are still many racists in our country that don’t like an African-American being elected as our President. In fact, a friend of mine in West Virginia recently told me that many Democrats in the Mountain State are not voting because they don’t like African-Americans. (I’m using a decent language; in West Virginia, as I am sure in other parts of our country, too, they still use the ‘N’ word.) All I can say is, “As a consequence, you deserve what you get, and you have no right to complain if you didn’t vote.” West Virginia is still paying a price for having voted for George Dubya in 2000. See my blog How dumb can a state be? below.
  4. Republicans are extremely shrewd and ruthless in digging dirt on Democratic candidates. Watch over the next ten weeks how that dirt will start piling up and may bury any hopes of a Democratic White House.

One of my very close friends said if the Republicans win the White House come November, he is moving to Canada. Something to ponder.

God Bless America and free us from right-wing, Red State, Republican radicals!

Flattened World: America, China, and India…a Travelogue

I just returned from a brief vacation to India where I visited Bangalore, where I was born; New Delhi, India's capital; and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. The long flights gave me a chance to catch up on my reading. I finished reading three books: The New Age of Innovation: Driving Cocreated Value Through Global Networks by C. K. Prahalad and M. S. Krishnan; Rivals: How the Power Struggle Between China, India and Japan Will Shape Our Next Decade by Bill Emmott; and The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria. Reading all three books with overlapping themes —globalization, the rise of Asian giants, and America’s need to live with the new economic powers— was a nice preface to my visit to India. Here are my thoughts.

The last time I visited in India was in 2001. I flew this time, as I did then, by Singapore Airlines (SQ) — unquestionably the best airline in the world. U. S. airlines should either emulate SQ or go bankrupt, and no one will shed a tear for their demise! Most of all, the flights from San Francisco to Singapore and then on to Bangalore (BLR) [1] were memorable, thanks to the exceptional and wonderful service by SQ.
==============
[1] Now called Bengaluru by fanatics, thanks to the idiotic Indian bureaucrats and politicians who waste their time ‘Indian’izing English names, e. g., Bombay --> Mumbai, Madras --> Chennai, and Calcutta --> Kolkata, instead of spending money on improving the decrepit infrastructure in India; wait till the morons rename India’s capital as Dilli (Delhi) or Navi Dilli (New Delhi), just as they did New Bombay --> Navi Mumbai! As for me, I’ll stick with our English names: I still like to wear my Bleeding Madras, sip my Bombay Sapphire Gin in the veranda of my bungalow, and muse about the Black Hole of Calcutta and the Bangalore Torpedo!
==============
BTW, SQ appears not to hire any female flight attendants if they are over 25 years old or weigh over 120 lbs! Singapore’s Changi Airport is a remarkable city in itself. Where else can you watch movies, play Nintendo Wii, Xbox360, or Sony PlayStation, or work out in a fitness center — all for free?

Arriving in the brand-new BLR airport, which is open 24 hours, was a pleasant surprise vis-à-vis the junkie airport of yesteryears, with an illy coffee shop, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Subway, and Baskin-Robins welcoming you at the airport! Is this junk-food heaven, globalization or a flattened world? Do you care?

Driving to my lodging in Bangalore, Cross Roads Inn, was an experience — 90 minutes to travel 40 kilometers or 24 miles. You think traffic in LA, New York, or Silicon Valley is bad? You ain’t seen nothin’ until you’ve been to India! On the way, you see ultra-modern, multi-story apartment complexes — even a scaled-down version of the Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur — and buildings housing offices of the likes of HP, IBM, Infosys, Microsoft, Motorola, Oracle, Tata Consulting Services, Wipro…right next to run-down buildings and abominable slums. I am convinced zoning laws don't exist in India.
IBM has over 70,000 employees in India and HP has over 28,000. And, in the tradition of many Indian employers, especially state-owned enterprises, most companies provide free transportation to and from work to their employees in the form of buses or vans. So you see scores of buses/vans hauling HP, IBM, or Oracle employees. At the airports in Bangalore or Delhi one can’t help noticing that about 50% of the passengers are professionals or businesswomen/men with laptops in HP-, IBM- or Dell-logoed carrying cases, using cell phones, and doing their work. I did not see this on my last trip.

Years ago, it would take you five to ten years to get a landline phone in India, unless you bribed a bureaucrat. Now that the telecom industry has been privatized (although there are still some state-run carriers), all you need today is a local address to get a mobile phone. I went with my cousin to a publicly held national carrier’s office and got a mobile phone in less than 20 minutes with a pre-paid plan! By the way, India today has almost 273 million mobile phones deployed and offers one of the cheapest rates in the world, at about 2 cents per minute! Internet access in cafes and coffee shops, e. g., Café Coffee Day, the Indian equivalent of Starbucks, is widespread and mostly free; you pay about 50 cents per hour of connectivity in cybercafes.
After a while, you get tired of Indian food and yearn for something American. So, I took my family for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe in Bangalore. The place is nice, with a decent bar and friendly staff. However, the veggie burger I ordered was the worst one I have ever tasted. It was schizophrenic and couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a veggie burger or a simple peas-and-potato patty! I can buy better veggie burgers at Trader Joe's in San Jose, California! My wife, though, enjoyed her hamburger made with imported beef from the U. S.!

Talking to many of my second cousins/nephews/nieces and young professionals at local bars…er, English-style pubs, I noted that about 80% of them, unfortunately, have no intention of going to America for higher studies: They would rather pursue a career with BT, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Reuters, or any of the multinationals cited above in India than come to the Land of Opportunity, especially now that it has become so hard to enter the U. S., following 9/11. By the way, ALL of them have read Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat.

So, is America losing out? Yes and no. Many Indians are going to Europe and Australia for higher studies, although the U. S. still remains the #1 destination. BTW, last year Australia attracted 37,000 Chinese and 28,000 Indian students, according to an Australian gentleman I flew with from Delhi to Bangalore.

As Zakaria notes in his book, America has to learn living with other rising powers and no longer act as a policeman to the world. The Chinese are dominating the African development scene, providing aid, building highways and oil refineries…without preaching human rights. Sure, China and India’s economies are showing robust growths, but will they displace America? Not quite, yet. The infrastructure in India is a disaster. For instance, Bangalore’s population has almost quadrupled to almost 7.2 million in 40 years; yet, none of the services — water supply, electric power, housing, and roads — have kept up to meet the growth. Hour-long commutes to cover barely five miles, the wasted gasoline (or petrol, as they call it there), and the accompanying pollution…we are sure are adding stress to peoples’ lives in Bangalore. Delhi is much better where all its transit buses and the three-wheeler auto-rickshaws run entirely on compressed natural gas (CNG). It is also trying to clean up its act to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

How about China? China is decades ahead of India in infrastructure — roads, highways, and electric power — but is choking with air pollution and drowning in polluted water, although it is temporarily closing many factories and drastically curtailing traffic in and around Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics. India has a shaky surface (roads, power grids, water supply, housing…) with a solid foundation (legal system, transparency, IP issues), whereas China has a solid surface (infrastructure), but a shaky foundation (questionable legal system, lack of transparency, lax IP issues, widespread piracy…).

Bottom Line
It was good to visit India after seven years, but it is GREAT to be back in America, my home!

Everything old is new again!

I just attended a Computerworld-sponsored conference SaaScon 2008 on software as a service, held in Santa Clara, CA.

The information technology ( IT) industry loves hypes — be they thin-clients, client-server computing, object-oriented databases, ASP, ISP, MSP, xSP, virtualization, Web x.0 (where x = 1, 2, or 3), mashups, cloud computing, social computing — which drive the industry, clients get excited, and the analysts and vendors work each other. The problem with us Americans is that we do not have an emphasis or focus on history, recent or otherwise.

Specific to this conference that focused on software-as-a-service (SaaS), it was amazing to see how many attendees were excited about the concept of SaaS. SaaS is nothing new: Thirty years ago they were called Service Bureaus (remember CDC’s Cybernet?) You submitted a job with punched cards to a computer that was housed who-knows-where, got the results back, fixed any errors, resubmitted your job, and got the final results after a few runs. This was real cloud computing: You had a dumb terminal (a.k.a. green screen), usually a 3270; a computer, usually a mainframe, and a network that you didn’t know what it consisted of. You probably had a TI Silent 700 terminal with thermal paper to input and print out the results, and not a desktop/laptop with lots of memory, disk space, GUI, and a wide-screen monitor. But, you got your work done, although it probably took you longer than it would today.

So, is SaaS going to take over the world? No, but it will play an increasingly significant role. Many defense contractors, banks, and financial-services companies are not big fans of SaaS because of security and privacy issues. Nicolas Carr, of the IT Doesn’t Matter fame, has a new book The Big Switch, where he essentially expounds the concept of utility computing (aka SaaS) that Larry Ellison of Oracle and Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems talked about over ten years ago. However, Mark Benioff of salesfocre.com actually delivered the solution. Scott even predicted circa 1996 that pretty soon all appliances in your home would be networked and that your light bulbs or fluorescent lights would beg to be replaced before they die. Today, 12 years later, none of the appliances —toaster, microwave oven, refrigerator, freezer, washer or dryer — in my home have an IP address! As the late, great Arthur C. Clarke said decades ago, and I am paraphrasing it, we tend to overestimate the short-term implications and underestimate the long-term implications of a new technology.

New technologies, for the most part, supplement existing ones, and not totally supplant them. We believe SaaS will steal some thunder from the traditional perpetual-licensing model, but will not totally replace it.

What can do the Democrats in?

While Barack and Hillary are debating as to who is going to answer that phone at 3 AM, McCain flies to the Middle East to visit ‘friendly’ (read ‘oil-rich’) countries there. So, could in-fighting among the Democrats will bury them?

I suggested to a friend of mine a month ago that Barack should agree to be Hillary’s VP candidate; he laughed at me. Barack better settle for it; otherwise, as my friend speculated, the ever-shrewd Republicans are going to dig up tons of dirt about Chicago southside-raised, liberal-Princeton-student-in-the-1970s Michelle Obama, and use that dirt to bury Barack. And, with our country in such an economic mess —the dollar at an all-time low against most major currencies, oil flirting at $110 a barrel, gold over $930 an ounce, housing and sub-prime mortgage meltdowns — the last thing we can afford is another four or eight years of Republican idiocy and ideology.

How dumb can a state be?

In a recent article, The New York Times reported that the lawmakers in the State of West Virginia, where I obtained my Ph. D., gave final approval to a bill that allows hunting education classes in all schools where at least 20 students express interest. My question is: How more stupid can you be? Whereas states such as California, where I live now and call my home, and ‘developing’ countries such as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) are investing in biotech, software, nanotechnology and other technologies that are shaping the 21st century, here is a stupid state investing in hunting education! This is akin to the Middle Eastern countries investing in education where almost 55% of the PhDs awarded are in Islamic studies! The modern world is being run by neither the 26 English alphabets nor the hundreds of Arabic or Chinese characters, but by ‘0’s and ‘1’s — it’s a cyber world.

West Virginia ranks among the bottom five of the 50 states in the U. S. in almost all categories — per-capita-education spending, healthcare, infrastructure spending, corporate tax incentives…And, here is a state that, for the first time in its history, voted for a Republican presidential candidate — George Dubya — in 2000. Why? Because Dubya in the last minute flew in NRA President Charleston Heston who convinced the dumb mountain dwellers that, if they voted for Al Gore, they would lose their rights to own guns and couldn’t hunt anymore! The result: West, by Gawd, Virginia is still stuck in the 20th century and, with its corrupt politicians, is emulating third-world countries. West Virginia is a beautiful state, but its politicians are making it ugly.

Is Detroit Dead as a Dodo? Part 2

We wrote in the Is Detroit Dead as a Dodo? blog below that over 70% of the cars sold in Silicon Valley have foreign labels. The San Jose Mercury News reported in its Friday, July 20, 2007 edition the top 20 vehicle brands sold in Santa Clara County from January through May, 2007.

Here is the list:

Toyota Prius 1,627
Toyota Camry 1,611
Honda Civic 1,504
Honda Accord 1,211
Toyota Corolla 1,168
Honda Odyssey 823
Toyota Sienna 765
BMW 3-Series 721
Ford F-Series 591
Toyota Tacoma 589
Lexus RX 497
Honda Pilot 489
Chevrolet Silverado 483
Toyota RAV4 468
Mazda 3 413
Lexus IS 394
Lexus ES 390
Nissan Altima 374
Acura MDX 351
Infiniti G35 31
Total 14780

Note there are only two ‘American’ cars in this list and foreign labels make up for over 92% of the total! By the way, The Merc also reported that 30,463 new cars and trucks were registered in the Santa Clara County between January and May 2007, but did not provide a breakdown by make and model.

So, Detroit is still a dodo in the Valley!

Whither America?

There have been countless news reports and articles in broadcast and print media during the past year on how China and India’s explosive economies will marginalize the U. S. over the next 20 to 40 years. We say, “Not so fast.”

To back what Jack (yes, Neutron Jack, the former head of GE) and Suzy Welch wrote in a recent issue of BusinessWeek, the news of the death of American leadership is highly exaggerated. America has a solid political system and one of the most, if not the most, corrupt-free economies in the world. Our system, despite its flaws, works. Following the resounding defeat of Republicans in the mid-term elections last years, there was a smooth transition, everything kept working, and there were no riots, no killings of either the contestants or the electorate — quite common in developing countries. Of course, elections in China are a farce. Corruption is rampant and a way of life in China and India.

The U. S. has had a solid democratic system for over 230 years with no military coup d’état or other political turmoil. India has an almost-60-year-long stable government, despite a short period when Mrs. Gandhi almost became a dictator and eventually paid a heavy price for it. But will the left-leaning, phony-patriots turn back the economic reforms instituted in the 1990s? China is an unknown. It is credited with inventing gun powder, paper…yet, xenophobic leaders built a giant wall to keep foreigners out! In each of these countries, just between 200 million to 300 million (depending on which source you believe) make a decent living; the rest barely live on $1-a-day wages. How long can this imbalance last? How long will it be before another Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung) rise and start a Peasant Revolution and massacre another 20 million Chinese?

Sure, we have inequity in the U. S. too. We may have the world’s best healthcare available, but it is not accessible to everyone, with almost 45 million uninsured Americans. Every President for the past 30 years has promised reforms, but healthcare costs continue to climb at three to four times the annual inflation rate. We spend almost $1.5 trillion annually on healthcare — 15% of our GDP, and it is expected to grow to 25% by 2010.

Despite our current pathetic leadership in Washington and stricter scrutiny of incoming students, America still attracts the world’s elite that come here to pursue higher education and dream and build a better future. What attracts them is freedom and innovation. We still lead in innovative manufacturing, computer hardware, software, biotech, and are making headways in new energy sources.

So, don’t kiss America ‘Good-Bye’ yet. We will prevail for a long time, unless we let our ignorant leadership in Washington, political arrogance, and technological complacency take over.

Is Detroit Dead as a Dodo? Part 1

Anyone who has watched the U. S. auto industry for the past 50 years has to wonder, “When will Detroit ever wake up?”

Toyota entered the U. S. market in 1957 with its ToyoPet Crown (shown above), which was an ugly but a cute car. "Japanese Quality" was an oxymoron in the U. S. in the 50s and early 60s. Through the 1960s, Japanese car manufacturers kept exporting cheap, gas-efficient, low-end cars. Detroit laughed at the Japanese and said, “They can have the low-end market, we build luxurious, high-end cars.” Then, the energy crisis hit in 1973.

Detroit was caught with its pants down and the Japanese took advantage of it. Having pretty much conquered the low end, Japan slowly started attacking Detroit from the side—mid-sized cars—and eventually from the top—the luxury brands. And, started building cars in the U. S., beating Detroit in its own backyard and, often, front yard. Today, Lexus rules the high end, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord dominate the sedan market, and Japanese manufacturers lead in fuel efficiency and J. D. Power Associates' quality survey and customer satisfaction. (Forget the ‘initial customer survey’ that covers the first 90 days of owning your car, which Ford touts; we think it is a joke. If a car has problems in the first 90 days of its existence, it shouldn't have been manufactured and shipped in the first place!)

Amidst all this turmoil Detroit made even bigger blunders: GM acquiring Saab, Ford buying Land Rover, Volvo, and Jaguar, and Chrysler agreed to be bought by Daimler. In all these cases, instead of the European brand-name qualities trickling down the poorly built American cars, the horrible qualities of Detroit percolated up their respective brands. The result: Daimler got rid of Chrysler in a fire sale; Ford is selling off Land Rover and Jaguar, and wait for it to unload Volvo and GM to follow the suit. The Big Three haven't realized that they can not only NOT make quality cars, but their diversification strategies throughout history have been disastrous. Remember Chrysler/Kelvinator/Ground Systems Division, Ford/Philco/Ford Aerospace, and GM/EDS/Electro-Motive Division/Frigidaire/Hughes/Terex?

By the way, here is a breakdown of profit or loss per car manufactured in North America:

Nissan $1,575
Honda $1,368
Toyota $1,266
Daimler -$1,072
GM -$1,436
Ford -$5,234

Source: Harbour Consulting, as quoted in The Wall Street Journal, June 14, 2007.

Of course, Detroit blames the UAW and retiree-benefits burdens. We believe this is just an excuse. Poor leadership and incompetent management always beat up on demanding workers! Yet, you see these days on TV commercials the Big Three (or 2½) touting their gas-guzzling monsters, or flag-waving, patriotic American Revolution ads—hardly ever about quality (or lack thereof).

All that Detroit executives have to do is stop meeting in their ex-smoke-filled, currently mahogany-furnished boardrooms in Detroit; instead, fly to Silicon Valley and drive through the parking lots of high-tech companies and educational institutions, where they will find over 70% of the cars are imported or have foreign labels! These folks are tomorrow’s leaders in the making. By the way, Toyota's market share—including the Lexus and Scion brands—in Santa Clara County is larger than those of Chrysler, Ford and GM combined.

Detroit is a loser city—The Big 2½, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons—having lost more than one-half of its population since 1950, to less than a million now. San Jose has beaten Detroit and is now the tenth largest city in the U. S. with a population of almost 950,000!

Going Private?

In the past few months we have seen many publicly held companies in the U. S. going private, often being acquired by leading private equity firms, such as the Blackstone Group, Kohlberg, Kravis, & Roberts, Silver Lake Partners, and the Texas Pacific Group.

Alltel, the wireless service provider, last month agreed to a $27.5 billion buyout by Texas Pacific and a unit of Goldman Sachs. KKR, notorious for taking companies private, invested $700 million in Sun Microsystems. Avaya is rumored to be selling itself to Silver Lake Partners and the Texas Pacific Group for more than $8 billion. Other notable buyouts include Chrysler, Bausch & Lomb, student-loan company Sallie Mae, Harrah’s, and TXU (Texas Utilities). Even Vitria, a small software vendor based in Silicon Valley, went private last year.

The reason most often given for these humongous buyouts is that these companies no longer have to be accountable for stockholders or waste resources on complying with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. In fact, some companies have even bypassed NYSE and NASDAQ and chosen to get listed on the stock exchanges in Hong Kong, London, or Singapore.

We believe this is a copout. If a company’s leadership and its board are honest and ethical, they have nothing to hide and should open their kimonos for everyone to see. Now, with them going private, who knows what goes on behind the curtains?

Globalization Discussion at TiEcon 2007

We recently attended TiEcon 2007, held May 18-19, 2007 in Santa Clara, CA. At the pre-conference Charter Members-only event, Dr. Laura Tyson, University of California—Berkeley, talked about globalization of the economy.

Globalization is a great moderator; the GDP per capita is growing globally. There is more equal growth across the world. This also has a great decoupling effect—the United States will not lose its leadership anytime soon, but its influence on the rest of the world will diminish in this century, despite what leaders in Washington believe. Global interdependence is healthy.

Globalization in the 19th and 20th centuries was driven by the railroad, steamship, and underwater cables, which led to massive trade on a global scale. Globalization can be related to creative destruction. Yet, 90% of Americans fear their jobs will be outsourced/offshored and only 30% feel globalization is good, and moves are afoot in Washington to limit imports and impose levies on them—all in the name of keeping jobs in-shore and reducing trade deficits.

Globalization creates losers and winners and there is a role reversal between the developed (G7) countries and emerging economies. Emerging markets comprise 80% of the world’s population, control 40% of the world’s exports, and 96% of all new workforce in 2005-2010 will be created in emerging markets! Threats to globalization are not the economy, but politics.

Footnote: Chindia or Indina

It is noteworthy that in 1800 China and India accounted for almost 40% of the world’s GDP. Today, despite their robust growth and exploding economies, their combined GDP is less than 7% of the global GDP. However, by the year 2050, the leading world economies are expected to be China, the U. S., and India—in that order.

Ellison, The (Ex)Terminator

Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison said a few years ago there are too many software companies, especially, in Silicon Valley and most of them don't deserve to exist, implying they should either go out of business or be acquired. In the past four years, Oracle has spent over $24 billion acquiring companies of the likes of Agile, Hyperion, Peoplesoft, Portal Player, Octet String, Siebel, Stellent, Sunopsis, TimesTen, Thor Technologies, and others.

Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison has been called many names, but we call him a Take-No-Prisoners Winner. Larry fought the U. S. Department of Justice and won.

We are sure the buying binge isn't over yet.
